INTRODUCTION

What are your thoughts about Flower Arranging?

'Once upon a time flower arranging was the preserve of the 1950's housewife accessorising the kitchen table, perhaps with help from doughty members of the W.I. Now floristry is attracting a younger, cooler crowd out to impress their social media followers.'

This was a journalists recent comment.

The article continued to explain that it is now art through the medium of flowers as opposed to that old grandma thing.

Unfortunately many think that it is a hobby for their grannies, but it is such an outdated point of view.

Flower Arranging is so much more, exciting, challenging and above all it is good for our well being.

Everyone appreciates flowers. We send them for all occasions, births, deaths, weddings, birthdays and they show that we care.

It is a creative activity for all ages but it is increasingly becoming very much a younger persons creative challenge,- contemporary, steam punk, carpentry, using and recycling plastics, rusty metal, and other objects that would not have been envisaged way back in the mid 20th century.

We are now very much into the 21st century and open to so many new and inventive ideas.

It doesn't mean that we have to forget the past, and it is a good idea to start with traditional arrangements and intermingle with more contemporary ideas. It is now an activity for all ages, juniors to seniors and all in between. You can be as active as you want or time permits.

Flower Arranging is taking many different parts and interweaving them to create a total picture, a unity of design.

This unity is a harmonious total image and is achieved by composition of the plant material using Elements and Principles of Design.

Other considerations must be the Vase/Container, Symbolism, Season/Availability, Position, Lighting, Occasion and Cost.

There are many different designs from Traditional to Contemporary, combined with techniques and craftwork that are forever evolving.

It makes for a very enthralling hobby.

LET'S GET STARTED

OBSERVATION - really open your eyes and mind -  look and see.

Time makes a difference with plant material. Is it the same today as it will be tomorrow? Is it the same in the morning as it is in the evening?

Look, really look - Use your 'seeing eye'.

We have to be realistic. Some of you have extensive gardens and some are more modest. Some of you already have collected dried and interesting items and others are new to this hobby. Do your best and observe plant material in your gardens, on your walks and in your storeroom if appropriate, and also in the supermarkets/shops.

WHAT DO WE LOOK AT?  Our medium for flower arranging is plant material.

The first thoughts are flowers and leaves. Explore further and look at bark, stems, branches, moss, fruits, and so on.

Can you see different shapes?

Look at the texture - how does the surface feel? Is it rough, smooth, shiny, prickly?

What colours can you see? Red - is it light red or dark red, orange-red, purple-red? Are there any other visible colours?

TEACH YOURSELF FLOWER ARRANGING

A flower arranger has to decide what works and what doesn't.

You can educate yourself by keeping a file of your work - thoughts, notes and photographs together with a small collection of examples.

We now understand that as well as doing practical flower arranging it is also of benefit to keep a file/portfolio for so many reasons.

ABOVE ALL, ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE.
